The Art of Burlesque at City Dance Center

With its origins in nineteenth century music hall entertainments and vaudeville, in the early twentieth century burlesque emerged as a populist blend of satire, performance art, and adult entertainment, that featured strip tease and broad comedy acts that derived their name from the low comedy aspects of the literary genre known as burlesque.

In burlesque, performers, usually female, often create elaborate sets with lush, colorful costumes, mood-appropriate music, and dramatic lighting, and may even include novelty acts, such as fire-breathing or demonstrations of unusual flexibility, to enhance the impact of their performance.

Burlesque is a style of live entertainment that encompasses parody and wit. The genre traditionally encompasses a variety of acts such as dancing girls, chanson, singers, comedians, mime artists, and strip tease artists, all satirical and with a saucy edge!

Featuring Miss Scarlet

Glamazon, Pin-Up Queen, Burlesque Sensation…

Miss Scarlet is a performer in the classic style of Burlesque. Her signature is the traditional fan dance in the spirit of the great Sally Rand, and she is dedicated to preserving the integrity of Burlesque as an art form. Miss Scarlet can be seen performing with the Concrete Rose Cabaret of Houston, and Fleur de Tease of New Orleans.

The Art of Burlesque - Class Description

Ladies Only! 18 and up

In this class, you will learn the basics of Burlesque performance, and get in shape with a playful shimmy and a seductive sway! You will gain confidence in yourself and your body, and enjoy the empowerment of expressing your feminine mystique!

You will learn basic moves to increase grace, balance, and core strength, all while having the time of your life! Classes will include sexy walks, fan dance, chair dance, hip and shoulder movements, and of course… CLASSY TEASE!

Burlesque is about loving life, loving yourself, and celebrating the beauty and glamour of women.
